GREECE - AIPS TEAM OF THE YEAR
TOMORROW THE AWARD CEREMONY IN LEIPZIG BEFORE THE MATCH WITH BRASIL IN THE CONFEDERATION CUP
When the 2004 European Championships began, none of the world's football pundits expected the final result - that Greece would be crowned champions of Europe. They were after some astonishing results, not least defeating the host nation Portugal in a dramatic final.
When AIPS sounded out its 144 member countries to name their Sports Team of the Year, there was no disagreement from the voting - the Greek football team was the AIPS Team of the Year.
The wonderful AIPS Trophy in the shape of a golden laurel wreath will be presented to the Greek FA, before the match, when the European Champions play the South American champions, Brazil, in Leipzig tomorrow in the Confederation Cup.
Appropriately, the trophy which is donated each year by the National Sports Journalism of Greece will be presented by Yannis Theodorakopoulos, a vice-president of AIPS and by Erich Laaser, president of the German Sport Journalist Association.
The AIPS awards have been running now for more than twenty years and are recognised as the most prestigious of all international Press awards.
The thoughts of the Greek football team were "We are just so proud and privileged to have won this very special award. It is a truly world wide recognition of our achievement and our success," said their spokesman.
The AIPS Awards for the best Sportsman, best Sportswoman, best Sports Team and best Press Facilities will be judged again later this year.
Issued from the AIPS Secretariat.
